Water Polo
General
In water polo the Club has achieved many important successes in Greece and Europe. The first participation of its athletes in the Olympic Games was in water polo.
The consecutive conquests of the European (2009 and 2010) by the women's team, the 1997 European Cup Winners' Cup for Men (the first European trophy won by a Greek team in polo), the championships and cups that have been won by the teams of all categories of the department, make Vouliagmeni one of the most successful clubs in the sport, both domestically and internationally. The department started its operation in 1957 and since then it has been on a continuous upward trajectory!

History of the Vouliagmeni Nautical Club Water Polo Department
A brief extract from the Historical Album of the Vouliagmeni Nautical Club "In Search of the Athletic Ideal", written by Mr. Panos Ioannidis and which was officially presented at the beginning of July 2008, in the context of the celebration of the 70th anniversary of the Club.
1957
"Tracing" the first steps of the men's team. The names of the first "heroic" athletes - which are certainly written in capital letters in the history of the department - were: TASOS KARAGIORGOS, GIORGOS (Boulis) KASIDOKOSTAS, GIORGOS KARAGIORGOS, PARIS STAYROU, MIMIS STAYROU, GRIGORIS FALIRES, TASOS FALIRES, KOSTAS PAPAVASILEIOU, MICHAEL PAPAVASILEIOU, STEFANOS CHALKIDIS and KOSTAS TAMVAKIS.
The first coach of the team was Michalis Mitrofanis, who also coached the swimming team of the Club at that time. The ever-present president Athanasios Diakakis was the backup.
This team "endured" for about two years, since the difficulties, mainly financial, were great and the progressive departure of its members, without the possibility of renewal, brought the end of its competitive action.
1961
The effort to set up the new men's team starts from the beginning. The "yeast" was still the basic members of the first team, such as Tasos Karagiorgos, George (Booulis) Kasidokostas, Parris and Mimis Stavrou, Tasos and Grigoris Falireas, Michalis and Kostas Papavasiliou, who together with the younger George Kaklamano, Nikos Trapalis, Dimitris Anastasopoulos, George Pasipoularidis and Thodoris Apergi made up the roster of the new team.
The team acquires its first coach Michalis Mitrofanis, while Andreas Giouzelis, the new swimming coach, takes over as its coach. It participates with claims in the championship of the C' category, which is held at the end of September in the swimming pool of Zappeion under difficult weather conditions, which meant cold water, since the swimming pool had no heating !
1962-1963
The team continues its course by participating in the Panhellenic Championship of the C' category with two new faces in its composition, C. Kalliodi and G. Zorzos, both members of the swimming team of the Club.
1964
The department is suspended and its future is unknown and uncertain.
1971
There is again starting to be talk of reopening the department. It is Elias Lakoumendas, the club's swimming champion, who in the summer of that year takes the courage to ask the management to re-establish the team. But the time for this had not yet arrived, as the Club's interest was focused on other sports, such as water skiing and swimming.

But the time for this had not yet arrived, as the Club's interest was focused on other sports, such as water skiing and swimming.
1972
With a proposal by Ilias Lakumenta to the president Athanasios Diakakis, the strong desire to create a new team is expressed and the Board gives its consent to start. They start from the beginning and with the support, now of the Board and the presence of the later president George Kambanis, who from the first moment was a helper and a warm supporter of all the efforts of the team, the trainings start with Ilias Lakoumenta as coordinator and aiming for a place in the C' category, which the next year was merged with the B' category (at that time there were the A' national, the A', B' and C' category).
1973
The team participates for the first time in the B' category championship, held in Agios Nikolaos, Crete, and finishes in 4th place in its group, making a satisfactory first performance with many promises for the future. It was made up of: Elias Lakoumendas (captain), Giannis Giannouris (first appearance), Alexis Dimou, Panagiotis Skouzis, Giorgos Letsios, Giorgos Kalliodis, Giorgos Zorzos, Plato Karkatzos, Orestis Kampanis and Andreas Kampanis. The team coach this year was Kostas Kasidokostas, a member of the Panathinaikos team.
1974
The team participates again in the championship of the B' category, which is held this time in Rethymno Crete in August and occupies the 3rd place.
1975
1976
The team participates in the championship of the B' category, which is held again in Kalamata, and this time occupies the 3rd place. Apart from this, however, there is also an internal change : Yannis Giannouris, the team's goalkeeper, is called up to the national youth team and gives his place to Sotiris Kakisis, later a distinguished writer and poet.
1977
The team participates in the championship of the new B' category, created by the merger of the A' and B' category, and occupies the 3rd place in the center group, after the teams of Panathinaikos and E.N.O. Egypt, with its members Ilias Lakoumenta (player and coach), Giannis Giannouris, Sotiris Kakisis, Nikos Peratinos, Dimitris Sacharidis, George Papadimitriou, Nonta Zakynthinos, Christos Sirko, George Letsio, Michalis Basta, Michalis Stergidis, Dimitris Papachristopoulos, Theodoros Tsedos and Panagios Fragatos.
This year the department presents, for the first time, a Youth team, which participates in the respective championship. It presents ... and team, which participates in the Panhellenic Championship for Children, where it scores 2 wins and 2 defeats, coached by Giannis Giannouris, who is making his first steps as a coach, without abandoning the active activity. On the contrary, he is at the peak of his athletic action and becomes the first athlete of the Group, invited to the Men's National Team, participating in the European Championship, held in Sweden.
1978
The team occupies the 3rd place in the B' national league, in the center group, and misses the chance to claim promotion to the first national league. It consists of the "old" Elias Lakoumenta, Giannis Giannouris, Sotiris Kakis, Dimitris Papachristopoulos, Nonta Zakynthinos, Panagi Fragatos, Orestis Kambanis (who returns after a year's absence) and Michalis Basta and the "young" Panagiotis Thambopoulos, Theodoros Angelopoulos, Michalis Makellarakis, Kyriakos Mistilis, Mikhe Pantelidis and G. Komi Komi.
There are changes in the administrative and technical area of the department with the most important one being the departure of Elias Lacoumenta from the technical leadership of the men's team. The team's coach is the former international goalkeeper of Panathinaikos Nikos Anagnostopoulos, while Giannis Giannouris continues, unpaid, the preparation of the children's teams from which the legendary "babies" of the next years came out, while at the same time he participates, as a member of the national team, in the World Championship in Berlin. Panos Ioannidis, member of the Board of Directors and later General Head of the Club's Sports Departments, is appointed as the curator of the department.
1979
The team once again took 3rd place, after the team of A.O.P.Faliro.
1980
A great year for the team, the department and the Club. Efforts, dreams, ambitions and goals of 8 years become reality and are justified in a festive way. A big and successful leap lands us in the saloons of the national league and leads us to the club of the greats of the sport.
The coach of the team since the end of the previous season is Homer Polychronopoulos and the worthy protagonists of the triumph are the team's players Elias Lakoumendas, Giannis Giannouris, Theo Angelopoulos, Stelios Vakirtzis, Nikos Gennimatas, Christos Dimou, Nnas Zakynthinos, Haris Zouras, Thomas Zografos, Panagiotis Thambopoulos, Dionysis Mavrotas, Sotiris Kalogirou, Thanasis Morphopoulos, Dimitris Moyralis, Dimitris Papachristopoulos, Dionysis Protopapas, Vangelis Rupakas and Kostas Sporidis. Panos Ioannidis was the curator of the section.
An entire season full of enthusiasm, camaraderie and romance was ending to begin a new one that would mark new, greater triumphs for the department and the Club. The teenage team took third place in the respective National Championship, where the much younger George Mavrotas, who was to become the leader and flag bearer of the section and the Club, made his appearance.
Giannis Giannouris participates with the National Team in the Moscow Olympics, while Vangelis Roupakas and Kostas Sporidis participate with the National Youth Team in the Balkan Games and the Pan-European Games in the Netherlands.
1981
Its first year in the big league of the A' National League and it was a real marathon since two rounds of barracks were needed to determine the two teams that would remain in the league and among them the newly promoted team of our Group.
But if the men's team fought hard to achieve its survival alongside the big teams, the teenage team, coached by Giannis Giannouris, fought and succeeded in becoming Greek Champions, defeating Volos 5-4 in the final.
1982
In the Championship the team is strengthened, makes a good performance and occupies the 5th place in the standings having in its composition: George Mavrotas, Dionysis Darras, Vangelis Rupakas, Giannis Giannouris, Christos Dimou, Nikos Gennimata, Dionysis Protopapa, Kostas Sporidis, Nonta Zakynthinos, Dionysis Mavrotas, Giannis Mavromanolakis, Theo Koukoulis, Giannis Delikanakis.
At the end of the season and after significant administrative rearrangements, Giannis Giannouris and Elias Lakoumendas leave the team and the Club. Anastasios Delikanakis, the later president, takes over as curator, while Homer Polychronopoulos remains as coach.
1983
The same course of the team is repeated, which again occupies the 5th place having in its composition George Mavrotas, Dionysis Darras, Nikos Darras, Vangelis Roupakas, George Manolis, Christos Dimou, Kostas Dimou, Kostas Sporidis, Nikos Genimata, Dionysis Mavrotas, Kostas Sakalis, Dionysis Protopapa, Kostas Protopapa, Theodoros Koukoulis and Yannis Delikanakis. However, the teenage team won the National Championship of its category, filling the people of the department with optimism for the future.
1984
The team again occupies the 5th place in the standings consisting of the same players as last year. The Youth team and the Teenage team, however, win the first place in the respective National Championships and Giorgos Mavrotas, now an accomplished polo player and member of our men's team, at the age of 17 participates in the Los Angeles Olympics and becomes the youngest polo player of the games.
Four more Olympiads would follow (Seoul, Barcelona, Atlanta, Sydney), where George would take part as a member of the National Team of our country and would create an unprecedented, at least for Greece, record of participation in 5 (five) Olympic Games, until 2000 (Sidney), when he hung his cap on the highest point of the trophy case of our Group!
1985
Omiros Polychronopoulos leaves the technical leadership of the department. He is succeeded, after more than two years of absence from the club, by Yannis Giannouris. The men's team is gaining ground in the Championship standings and occupies 4th place with the team consisting of Nikos Darras, Vangelis Roupakas, George Manolis, George Mavrotas, Dionysis Protopapa, Vassilis Paslis, Giannis Delikanakis, Kostas Sakalis, Christos Dimou and Kostas Dimou. In the same year the Youth team won the trophy of the Greek Champion.
Women
Start for women's water polo in the club. Yannis Giannouris is starting to activate and push the department towards the creation of a women's team. So he invites interested women, mainly female swimmers, and coaches them in the afternoons at the Zappeion swimming pool, until the activity is transferred to the Club's swimming pool in the summer (details in the Women's team chapter).
1986

Coach Yannis Giannouris, Curator Petros Hatzikostas.
However, apart from the team's success in the Championship, the same thing happens in the Greek Cup, losing in the final match to Glyfada (4-5), which in the same year is also crowned Champion. This fact gives our team the right, as a Cup finalist, to take part in the European Cup Winners' Cup, taking 2nd place in the A’ round (after Duisburg) and 3rd place in the B’ round (after Mornar Split) and Pescara.
In the same year, the Youth team emerged as Greek Champions. For the first time in the team's history, 5 of its athletes were invited to our National team: Giorgos Mavrotas, Nikos Darras, Vangelis Roupakas, Kostas Protopapas and Akis Kakarnakis.
1987
The exact same picture from last year is repeated: the team takes 3rd place in the Championship and 2nd place in the Cup with the opponent, A.N.O. Glyfadas (7-10).

Glyfada with a draw in regular time (7-7) and a defeat in overtime (10-8) and elimination from the final phase of the European Cup, by Dynamo Moscow (6-5 and 4-15).

The Men's team wins the European Cup! The dreams and expectations of all the people of the department and the V.N.C. are miraculously realized, promoting and honoring not only the Club itself and Vouliagmeni, but also Greece throughout the sporting Europe. The team occupies 2nd place in the Greek Championship of the A1 category, after an eventful match in the final of the play-offs with Olympiacos (4-5) at the Club's swimming pool.
But if the championship was lost unfairly, the Greek Cup came to Vouliagmeni. Our team defeated Olympiacos 8-7 in the final and was crowned Greek Cup Winner.
In the European Cup Winners' Cup, with victories over the Italian Pescara, the Yugoslav Becej and the Hungarian Vazutas, the team advances to the round of 8 of the competition, where it is eliminated.
At the beginning of the season (October 1998), Polyvios Afroudakis, a successful section supervisor, leaves and is succeeded by Nikos Klimakis, our member and supervisor of the younger age groups, with Savvas Megoulas as a collaborator, also our member and supervisor of the younger groups.
1999-00
The team takes 2nd place in the A1 Championship after a close match, in which it was defeated after extra time, in a “sudden death” match. The coach is still Giannis Giannouris, with Dimitris Mavrotas as his partner.
At the end of the season, Giannis Giannouris leaves the technical leadership of the department, taking up a managerial position in the Organizing Committee of the Athens Olympic Games in 2004. 2000-1
The year of the “near” conquest of the European Cup LEN TROPHY. The team reached the final of the competition, defeating the Italian Brescia in the first match at home by 6-7, but losing in the replay, after extra time, in “sudden death” by 7-9.

The Youth team holds the Group's flag high by winning the Greek Championship in its category, defeating Ethnikos Piraeus 7-5 in the final match of the competition.
2001-2
It is marked by the tragic loss of Akis Tsataliou. A select player for the men's team (1986-1995), coach of the infrastructure sections (girls) and coach of the Women's team for the last 7 years, Akis passed away suddenly on March 10, at noon, during his team's championship match against Ethnikos Piraeus.
In the competitive field, the men's team takes, for the umpteenth time, 2nd place in the A1 Championship. In the Greek Cup, it is again in the final phase against Olympiacos. The result is a defeat by a single goal difference (9-10), while in the European Cup Winners' Cup the team advances to the 4th round of the competition, where it is eliminated by the Hungarian Vasas.

Coach: Vangelis Roupakas and curator: Nikos Klimakis.
The season ends with the retirement from active activity of the international polo player, with five (5) Olympic participations, and captain of the V.N.C and the National Team, Giorgos Mavrotas. He had made his first appearance and participated in the men's team in 1981, at the age of 16. For twenty-one (21) years, he was present and the protagonist of all its successes and he never stopped feeling and being part of the Group.
2002-3
History and the 2nd place in the A1 Championship repeats itself, with Olympiacos as our “eternal” rival. In the European Cup Winners’ Cup, our team was eliminated in the quarter-finals by the powerful Italian team Posillipo, after extra time, in a “sudden death” match.

At the end of the year, the 4-year coach Vangelis Roupakas is succeeded by Serbian coach Dejan Jovovic, while the team's key athletes Giorgos Afroudakis, Giorgos Reppas, Dimitris Mazis and Christos Afroudakis leave the team. The cycle of the Club's great polo team, which has been starring since 1996, has closed.
2004-5
The team is presented without its 4 main members, who have chosen other destinations, with the consequence of being significantly weakened. Thus, in the A1 Championship, the team, after many years, remains outside the 3rd group and occupies 8th place, having in its composition many, young athletes.
It consists of Theo Loranto, Jeff Powers, Dimitris Miteloudis, Giorgos Hatzidakis, Stelios Protonotarios, Elmisian Artin, Giorgos Katsaounis, Dimitris Tsiklos, Zachos Afroudakis, Tony Koutsoyiannis, Angelos Angelidis, Evangelos Doudesis and Kostas Tsalkanis. 2005-6
Dimitris Mavrotas, a former player of the team and for several years the coach of the Club's younger age groups (with significant successes and championship victories), takes over as coach, and he also takes on the task of rebuilding it.
Nevertheless, the end of the championship finds them in 6th place. The composition: Angelos Angelidis, Stelios Protonotarios, Dimitris Miteloudis, Nikos Kafetzopoulos, Fanis Tigas, Evangelos Doudesis, Dimitris Tsiklos, Kostas Tsalkanis, Gerben Silvis, Giorgos Hatzidakis, Giorgos Katsaounis, Zachos Afroudakis and Vasilis Emmanouilidis. Superintendent: Lazaros Antoniadis.
2006-7
The team, although ... young, continues to "climb" in the A1 Championship standings, occupying 4th place supported by Stelios Protonotarios, Kostas Tsalkanis, Giorgos Hatzidakis, Dimitris Miteloudis, Giorgos Katsaounis, Dimitris Tsiklos, Vassilis Emmanouilidis, Milan Ticic, Angelos Angelidis, Kostas Bournazos, Giannis Salpea, Paris Hatzigoula, Evangelos Doudesi, Dionysis Karountzos and Dimitris Lentzos. Coach is Dimitris Mavrotas and manager is Lazaros Antoniadis.
At the end of the season, the team's coach, Dimitris Mavrotas, leaves after a successful run and Giannis Giannouris, the coach of the European Cup and the 3 Panhellenic Championships, returns after an absence of 7 years.
2007-8
In a dramatic final, the Youths lose the gold medal in overtime, to Chania. However, it is the first time in years that an age group of the Group claims the title of Champion with claims. The Teenagers and the Boys follow, winning 2nd places in the Panhellenic Championships.
The men's team, coached again by Giannis Giannouris and refereed by Rennos Velonias, achieved 5th place and renewed its presence in European competitions. The team consists of: Stelios Protonotarios, Kostas Tsalkanis, Andro Franitsevits, Dimitris Miteloudis, Giannis Salpeas, Evangelos Doudesis, Paris Hatzigoulas, Dionysis Karountzos, George Katsaounis, Angelos Angelidis, Milan Samartzics, George Hatzidakis, Petros Doudesis.
At the same time, Dimitris Miteloudis is among the selected members of the National Team for the pre-Olympic tournament, the European Championship and, most importantly, for the Beijing Olympic Games, where V.N.C. has a representative for the 8th consecutive time!
1981
A Women's Polo Team, consisting of athletes from various departments as well as children of members, is participating in the "Group's Sports Festival" in the form of a demonstration for the first time. This was the beginning...
1985
Systematic training sessions for the Women's team begin at the initiative of Giannis Giannouris, coach of the Club's Men's team.
1988
The 1st Women's Championship is held. Vangelis Roupakas, an international player of the men's team and later its coach, takes over. The team wins 2nd place, while 5 of its members, Tzina Roupakas, Terry Roupakas, Alexia Kammenou, Eleana Pagoulatou and Evelina Delikanaki, are invited to the first National Team of our country. The team's supervisor was Sotiris Antoniadis.
1989 - 1990
The Women's Team of the Club once again takes 2nd place.
1991
The big moment arrives, when the girls of the team triumphantly lift the Greek Champion cup. It is the time to justify the efforts that are not limited to the time horizon of the Panhellenic Championships, but begin long before, when Giannis Giannouris, Vangelis Roupakas and Anestis Pesmatzoglou began the creation of the team in 1985 at the Zappeion swimming pool or even earlier, when the members of the Club saw for the first time young girls playing a “male” sport, such as polo, at the “Sports Fair” of 1981.
The final match of the Championship against Ethnikos Piraeus, winner of the three previous championships, and our team's 5-4 victory was decided in overtime and "sudden death".
All the girls on the team were of course wonderful in their great effort to win the coveted title. However, it is worth mentioning separately the amazing performance of the team's goalkeeper, Tzina Roupaka, who saved 3 penalties!
The team's most worthy athletes were Iro Damaskou, Evelina Delikanaki, Liana Dima, Nicole Kavvadia, Alexia Kammenou, Sofia Kourakou, Mania Bikoff, Eleana Pagoulatou, Terry Rupaka, Gina Rupaka, Eugenia Skountzou, Sirene Tsalta and Despina Farou.
The coach and architect of this success was Vangelis Roupakas. The title of Greek Champion gives our team the right to participate in the European Club Champions Cup, where it qualifies for the final six of the competition.
1992
Our team wins 2nd place in the Greek Championship, while Alexia Kammenou, Liana Dima, Mania Bikoff, Gina Rupaka and Terry Rupaka are called up to the National Team. In the same year, Gina Rupaka emerges as the best goalkeeper in Europe!
1993
The title of Greek champion is “going down” to the Group for the second time. Our Champions were: Terry Rupaka, Gina Rupaka, Alexia Kammenou, Liana Dima, Mania Bikoff, Maria-Stella Radou, Jenny Skountzou, Evelina Delikanaki, Niovi Mara, Phryne Andrianaki, Andy Melidoni, Maria Kiskira, Sirene Tsalta and Sofia Kourakou.
Coach and major contributor to the triumph is Vangelis Roupakas, while Sotiris Kakisis, goalkeeper of the legendary team of 1976-80, has been the team's manager since the beginning of the season. In the European Champions Cup, our team qualifies for the final phase and is ranked 4th.
1994
The great success of winning the Greek Championship is repeated in a triumphant manner, since during the championship the team suffers only one defeat. In the same year, the Junior Women's team is also declared Greek Champion, confirming the dominance of the Club in the field of women's polo.
The coaching team, responsible for the younger age groups, also includes Akis Tsatalios, a former key figure in the men's team, who, together with the coach of the women's team, lead the department on the path to success. The women's team is headed by Dionysis Protopapas, also a former key player in the men's team.
1995
The team, after two consecutive championships, falls to 3rd place, having Dimitris Mavrotas as coach and Andreas Marinakis, a member of the Board of Directors, as administrator. In the same year, the Junior team again wins the Panhellenic Championship with Akis Tsatalios as coach.
1996
The team takes 2nd place with the Spaniard Pepe Brasco Kata as coach, former coach of the men's team. In the same year, the Junior team wins the Panhellenic Championship of their category for the third consecutive year, with Akis Tsatalios as coach again.
1997
Akis Tsatalios takes over as coach of the women's team, having won three championships with the Junior team, and leads them to the conquest of the 4th – in its history – Greek Championship with Tsina Rupaka, Alexia Kammenou, Liana Dima, Terry Rupaka, Niovi Mara, Phryne Andrianaki, Andy Melidoni, Antigone Roumbesi, Sofia Petsali, Maria Kiskira, Giuli Lara and Ioanna Karanassio.
In the same year, the Junior Girls team won the Panhellenic Championship in its category for the fourth consecutive time. The department's director is Andreas Marinakis.
1998
The women's team takes 2nd place in the championship, with a goal difference from Olympiacos, but the youth team reaches the conquest of its fifth consecutive Panhellenic title, an enviable success and a sample of the great work that is done in the section and the younger age groups.
The participation of our athletes in the National Team continues with Tina Roupaka, Alexia Kammenou, Andy Melidoni and Phryne Andrianaki who achieved 5th place at the World Championships in Perth, Australia.
1999
The women's team once again takes 2nd place in the Greek Championship, with Australian Simone Hanken in its lineup, and the Junior team wins the title of Greek Champion for the umpteenth time, coached, always, by Akis Tsatalios and his partner, Alexis Staikopoulos.
Alexia Kammenou, Andy Melidoni, Sofia Petsali and Krystallia Diamantidis are invited to the National Team, participating in the 5th place win at the European Championship.
2000
The team reaches the European dream by reaching the final match of the European Cup LEN TROPHY. In this match, which took place at our swimming pool, they faced the Italian Gifa Palermo, to which they were defeated 5-9.
Despite the defeat, it was certainly the greatest success so far in the career of the team, which consisted of Antigone Roumbesi, Giuli Lara, Alexia Kammenou, Tzina Roupakas, Andy Melidoni, Anna Charalambidou, Sofia Petsali, Dina Kouteli, Lida Komninou, Vasia Klimaki, Annie Angelidi, Phryne Andrianaki, Ioanna Diamantidis and Krystallia Diamantidis. The coach was Akis Tsatalios and the umpire was Andreas Marinakis.
In the Greek Championship, the team, exhausted by its over-effort in its European campaign, takes 3rd place.
After the end of the Championship, sisters Gina and Terry Roupakas are retiring from active activity, after approximately 15 years of participation and rich contribution to the Club and our National Team. The Club's women's polo owes a lot to Terry and Gina, to Gina and Terry (twin sisters), who will continue to quietly offer their valuable services as coaches of the Club's young age groups, winning countless championships and preparing in the best way the young polo players who from time to time staff the Women's team of the department.
2001
The women's team takes 2nd place in the Greek Championship, while the Junior team wins the title of Champion once again. At the end of the season, Alexia Kammenou, an international athlete and a key member of the women's team since its first appearance in 1986, retires from active activity. A little later, she will become the team's manager and, from 2006, its coach.
2002
The year is marked by a tragic event: Akis Tsatalios, the coach of the team that gave it so many distinctions and moments of triumph, faints during the match against the National Team for the Championship, at the Piraeus swimming pool and, while being transported to the hospital, passes away at the age of just 33.
The news shocked the entire Club as well as the entire world of Greek polo, but especially his teammates on the men's team and the girls on the team, who are unable to realize that Akis will no longer be around them.
In the Greek Championship, the team, with the heavy shadow of the loss of Akis, takes 2nd place with Stamatis Helmis as acting coach. The Young Women's team (formerly Juniors) wins the Greek Championship in its category, with Tzina Roupaka as coach and Andreas Marinakis as Superintendent.
The same achievement is achieved by the Junior Women's team, which is crowned Greek Champion with coaches Gina and Terry Roupaka and head coach Katerina Geka. In the European Cup LEN TROPHY, our team succeeds and passes to the final phase of the competition, where it takes 4th place.
2003
The Women's Polo Department fulfills the most optimistic expectations of the Club. Its successes are unique and honor the Club and Greece. A top achievement and brilliant success, the conquest of the European Cup LEN TROPHY, in the final phase of the institution that was organized at the Club's swimming pool on April 18-20.
At the same time, our team wins the Panhellenic Championship title for the 5th time in its history.
The golden girls of the team are: Annie Angelidi, Ioanna Diamantidis, Krystallia Diamantidis, Kelina Kantzou, Dina Kouteli, Giuli Lara, Andy Melidoni, Anthi Mylonaki, Evi Moraitidou, Sofia Petsali, Antigone Roumbesi, Vasso Florokapi, Phryne Andrianaki and Anna Charalambidou. The coach of the great success was Giorgos Katsoulis and his assistant was Tina Roupaka.
The Young Women's team also wins the Panhellenic Championship title with Coach Tina Roupaka and Supervisor Katerina Geka.
2004
At the Athens Olympic Games, 5 of the girls from the Women's team participated in the country's Olympic Team which won the silver medal: they are Andy Melidoni, Antigone Roumbesi, Evi Moraitidou, Giouli Lara and Anthi Mylonaki. At the Greek Championship, the team took 2nd place with the same composition and the same coach.
2005
The title of Greek Champion returns triumphantly for the 6th time in the Group.
Our team wins the trophy, by a large margin over the second place, with coach now Tassos Papanastasiou and assistant coach Alexia Kammenou. The referee was Nikos Peratinos, a member of the men's polo team from the 1976-78 season.
The Young Women's team, under the guidance of Terry Rupaka and the collaboration of Tina Rupaka, continues and conquers the Greek Championship in its category for the umpteenth time. In the European Cup LEN TROPHY, our team qualifies for the final phase, where it takes 4th place.
Antigoni Roumbesi, Giuli Lara, Katerina Oikonomopoulou, Kelina Kantzou, Alexandra Asimaki and Maria Tsouri are members of the National Team that conquers the World League, the final phase of which takes place in St. Petersburg.
2006
The team wins the title of Greek Champion for the 7th time with coach Tasos Papanastasiou and referee Nikos Peratinos. In the European Champions Cup, the result of the previous year is repeated with participation in the Final Four and winning 4th place. The Young Women's team, true to tradition, wins the title of Greek Champion again with coaches the sisters Gina and Terry Roupaka.
2007
The triumphant course of the Department continues. The Women's team deservedly wins the title of Greek Champion for the 3rd consecutive time and for the 8th time overall in its History! This is truly an enviable and remarkable achievement of the Club in the field of Women's Polo.
The composition of the team: Anthi Mylonaki, Christina Tsoukala, Andy Melidoni, Vec Rippon, Kelina Kantzou, Kiki Liosi, Katerina Oikonomopoulou, Antigoni Roumbesi, Sofia Petsali, Despina Chrysikopoulou, Dina Kouteli, Giuli Lara, Elena Kouvdou and Nafsika Alexaki. The coach since the beginning of the season is Alexia Kammenou, an international player of the Club, assistant coach until last year, with collaborators Gina and Terry Roupaka and supervisor Nikos Peratinos.
The strengthening of our National Team continues, as Antigone Roumbesi, Giouli Lara, Katerina Oikonomopoulou, Kelina Kantzou, Kiki Liosi and Elena Kouvdou are participating in the World Championship (in Melbourne), while Dina Kouteli, Despina Chrysikopoulou and Christina Tsoukala are also participating in the preparations.
2008
The girls fail to defend their title and remain marginally in 2nd place, behind Glyfada.
In the Champions Cup, however, they put in excellent performances and after eliminating the Hungarian Honved in the quarterfinals (with a victory and qualification to the second leg in Budapest) and the European Champion Fiorentina in the semifinals of the Final Four, on Italian soil, they are in direct competition for the top inter-club title.
Unfortunately, they fail to do so, losing in extra time by one goal to the host (and 6-time European Champion in the last 8 years) Horizonte Catania. However, they have put in their best performance in the competition's history.
The year concludes with the presence of 6 athletes on the Olympic Team, as Christina Tsoukala, Kiki Liosi, Alexandra Asimaki, Antigone Roumbesi, Angeliki Gerolimou and Giouli Lara represent the Greek colors in Beijing.
The girls who accompanied the 6 internationals, in the 2007/8 season, were Anthi Mylonaki, Andy Melidoni, Nafsika Alexaki, Kelina Kantzou, Despina Chrysikopoulou, Dina Kouteli and Elena Kouvdou. The team's coach was Alexia Kammenou, with Gina Roupaka as assistant and Nikos Peratinos as the manager.
This year marks 21 years of the Greek Panhellenic Championships, during which the Women's Polo Club won:
- Eight (8) Women's championships.
- Fourteen (14) championships in the Junior and Young Women's categories (renamed Junior in 2001).
- Six (6) championships in the Girls' Division.
An amazing harvest of gold medals, which ranks our Club at the top of Greek Women's Polo, which deservedly represented our country on the international stage by winning the LEN TROPHY European Cup. A brilliant course, based on the fruitful and creative work of the people of the department and especially the technicians in the infrastructure teams, which gives optimism and the prospect of great successes in the future.
