The Captain of the Vouliagmeni Nautical Club Men's Water Polo Team, Christos Afroudakis, and former Captain of the National Team, announces his retirement from competitive water polo.
The Management of the Vouliagmeni Nautical Club warmly thanks Christos Afroudakis for his valuable and many years of contribution to the VNC and wishes him good luck in his next steps.
Below is the relevant statement by Christos Afroudakis:
"After almost 31 years of involvement in the sport of water polo, the time has come for me! After much thought and with great emotion, I announce that with the end of the Final 8 for the Greek Cup, I am retiring from active participation."
This is unfortunately the fate of every athlete! Championship, no matter how hard it is, no matter how hard it sounds, has an expiration date!!! I wish our bodies and spirits could withstand time as happens in most "professions" so that we would not have such a short end.
I will not tire of reporting and analyzing my career in terms of successes, failures, difficulties, sacrifices, family, teams, coaches, etc., even though objectively the above constitute a basic pillar and "fuel" for every athlete, so that he can learn to set new goals every day and be able to achieve them sooner or later.
I would like to focus elsewhere! On what remains when the curtain falls and all the lights go out. It is none other than the values and principles such as ethics, honesty, respect, discipline, justice, teamwork, with which I walked and will continue to walk outside the playing fields.
With these values and principles, I hope to have been and continue to be a healthy sports role model for my teammates and young children. Not only for my distinctions and abilities in the sport of water polo, but mainly for my human attitude all these years.
Finally, I would like to thank, literally from the bottom of my heart, all my teammates and coaches in Greece and abroad, as well as the clubs I played for. Obviously, the Vouliagmeni Nautical Club holds a special place in my heart.
With respect,
Christos Afroudakis»
